Your legal requirements in Alabama
What the law actually requires where you are — summarized from our jurisdiction guides. Open any topic for the full details.
Alabama follows the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)): there is no fixed first-aider-to-employee ratio, but where no infirmary, clinic or hospital is in near proximity the employer must ensure adequately trained persons and first-aid supplies are readily available. OSHA guidance expects a responder to reach a victim within 3-4 minutes for high-hazard operations and roughly 15 minutes for lower-hazard sites.
Alabama's Minimum Standards for Child Care Centers (Alabama DHR) require at least one staff member aged 19 or older holding a current infant-child (pediatric) CPR certificate and a current first aid certificate present during all hours of operation. A fully online course will not qualify, though a blended course pairing online coursework with an in-person skills check does.
In Alabama, Ala. Code § 6-5-332 grants immunity to a lay rescuer who in good faith and gratuitously renders emergency care at the scene of an accident or emergency, with the shield lost only for willful or wanton misconduct. A companion provision, Ala. Code § 6-5-332.3, provides immunity for use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) requires 24 contact hours per two-year renewal from a Board-approved provider as a condition of licence renewal. Advanced life-support courses such as ACLS, CPR/AED and PALS taken through a recognized provider can carry contact hours toward this requirement.
Alabama assisted living and specialty-care assisted living facilities are governed by the Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 420-5-20. A specialty-care assisted living facility must be staffed at all times by at least one person holding current CPR certification, obtained within 90 days of hire.
Under the Alabama Minimum Standards for Foster Family Homes (Ala. Admin. Code r. 660-5-29-.02), each caregiver must hold a current infant-child CPR certificate and a current first-aid certificate from a recognized organization before a child is placed. CPR completed entirely online is not accepted for foster-parent approval, and the requirement is administered by the Alabama DHR, Office of Residential Licensing.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Alabama, with a 3-year certification, and OSHA does not prohibit the online format. OSHA interpretation letters favor training that includes a hands-on skills evaluation, so blended formats (online theory plus a practical component) are recommended.
