In Alabama, assisted living facilities — including specialty-care assisted living for residents with cognitive impairment — house vulnerable adults and seniors who rely on staff for their safety. To ensure a rapid emergency response, these settings must keep CPR-trained staff on duty at all times.

The first-aid requirement

The Alabama Administrative Code requires a specialty-care assisted living facility to be staffed at all times by at least one person holding current CPR certification, obtained within 90 days of hire. Care staff must be able to intervene while emergency services are on the way.

A recognized, up-to-date CPR certificate is the way to meet this obligation; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
